All taking part will need to have personal outdoor clothing that should be warm, windproof and waterproof. A pair of sturdy walking boots with good ankle support is recommended, except for the beach section. A medium sized day sack is also needed to carry your kit and food. You will be expected to carry all your own equipment, including a personal first aid kit.
Please use this as a guide to your packing:
Fleece top
Sun protection cream
Waterproof/windproof trousers
Waterproof top
Warm hat/ peak cap
Sunglasses/lip salve
Shorts and t-shirt
Swimming costume and towel (only stated certain sections.)
Water bottles (2-4litres, preferably with drinking tube attached.)
Day sack (30 – 50 litre size)
Walking boots and socks!
Personal equipment
Money and personal medications
Fully charged cell phone
Firstaid kit
Food!

Participation in this event is unguided and completely at your own risk. Individuals will be briefed of the route that will be taken, and are advised to carry a map and compass, or GPS. The routes have been checked on reconnaisance, and given an approximate grade of difficulty as viewed by those compiling the route map.
Prior to starting each section we will have a safety briefing on how we intend to carry out proceedings in an accident or emergency situation, and precautions we are taking to minimise risk. Those agreeing to accompany The Mountains of Hope team, will agree to follow these procedures and precautions. |

Stroller: (S) a gentle walk on flatter ground, a clear path, beach section or wide track. Distance between 4km and 9km. No steep ascent or descent. Suitable family walk with children.
Moderate: (M) easier walk on reasonable terrain on clear pathways and tracks. May have vertical gain in ascent of up to 150m and similar descent. Roughly 2.5hrs or 3hrs in length.
Mid Huff: (MH) a walk at fast pace on good pathways involving more than 150m of vertical ascent, and or steep descents. Suitable for those who walk regularly for a few hours at a time. May involve an exposed section or a scramble.
Challenging: (C) Rather challenging. Involves steep ascents for anything up to 500m of vertical height gain. Scrambling and very exposed sections. No clear footpath and uneven terrain for part of the journey. Scrambling skills essential. Map navigation skills may be requited in poor conditions. Pace is fairly brisk. Experienced hiking off he beaten path required.
Extreme: (E) extremely difficult only for experienced and ultra fit. Over 500m of vertical ascent, often very steep incline and difficult decent. No clear footpath for a major section of the walk. Navigation and basic climbing skills are essential. Walking at a reasonable to fast pace for four to five hours. Involves roped and difficult scrambling sections. |
