The Door of Hope

Door of Hope is a non-profit organization that rescues and receives any abandoned, abused and orphaned babies and children from different sources. They provide loving and stable Christian environments for these children with the
objective to find them a home either through adoption and forever families, long term foster care, or permanent placement at other facilities for special needs.

Door of Hope began at Berea Baptist Church in 1999. The church made a hole in their wall and a “baby bin” was installed allowing mothers to leave their babies any time day or night. The moment the baby is placed in the bin, it rings a bell in the main house, alerting care givers of the arrival of a new comer. The baby is taken in and the anonymity of the “mother” insured. Other babies are brought personally by their mothers or the police, community members, hospitals and clinics.

As a charity is self supporting and relies entirely on donors to support its facilities. Their support comes from individuals, churches, groups, and companies that bring donations in kind as well as financially.

A new home has just opened in Cape Town. The Rainbow House is a separately run home. Over the past month they have decided to run independently for the Door of Hope. Door of Hope hopes to work with many other homes around South Africa to save many more children than we currently can help in our three homes in the area; 2 in Glenvista and 1 in Hillbrow. The Johannesburg homes have a current total capacity of 48 children where babies enjoy the loving care of caregivers and volunteers until arrangements can be made for their adoption.

Why is this appeal so important?

Laying the foundations

Any funds raised for Door of Hope will enable them to provide:

  • Formula
  • Nappies
  • Groceries for the 14 toddlers
  • Educational toys
  • Baby Rockers and Playsets

With your financial support, we can help even more babies, and provide them with love and support they need until they are ready for adoption.

Facts about babies

Did you know?

  • A two month old baby drinks on average half a litre of milk per day. That works out to around 15 litres per month to provide them with the nourishment they require to develop a healthy body.
  • It is estimated that approximately 45-60 babies are abandoned each month in Johannesburg alone
  • It takes over four loads of laundry daily to keep all of the children properly dressed
